Okay, so it's not your average guestbook. Since
moving from the pop-up infested geocities, I "lost" the ability to have
a guestbook (my new ISP doesn't provide that service). No biggie! I'll
post your emails here if you let me! Just send me an email and I'll put it up here
(Don't worry - I'll never post your last name or your email address!).
Regards,
Greg
Well -- I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who loves this movie!!!
I first saw it when I was very young -- like in the late sixties or early
seventies on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. It made a strong impression
on me, so I never forgot it, even though I never saw it again -- but
I did forget the name of it.
Finally, I saw it on TV at my parents house around Christmas in 1988 or
1989 -- it must be the time you recorded it. I have a copy of that on
tape, but it has commercials, and it doesn't have all -- or maybe none -- of
the songs in it. I have a very clear memory of Gale Storm singing
by herself while babysitting, and that was not in the version I have. I
haven't watched the taped version for many, many years ... but I was looking
to see if it would be on TV this year for Christmas -- but, as you know, it
wasn't.
Which is what lead me to your site -- I was trying to find a copy of the full
movie on the inter-net.
Some of the scenes I remember so well are:
When Michael O'Conner thinks the baby belongs to Trudy, his daughter ... the
confusion is pretty amusing, and his reaction is extremely mild considering
the times...
When McKeever (the hobo) walks in on Mary O'Conner giving Michael O'Conner a
back rub and says, "It warms my heart to see people falling in love in a house
where those who have everything fall out of love" or words to that effect, and
Mary O'Conner is brought to tears...
As I said before, Trudy singing to a baby and unaware that Jim is watching
her, clearly besotted...
When the guys go to see Michael O'Conner with some kind of investment idea,
and at first don't realize that "Mike" is Michael O'Conner and try to drag him
out of his own office for his own good...
The end, when Michael O'Conner says, "Next year he's coming in the
front door."
I
did find the DVD for sale at
www.turnerclassic.moviesunlimited.com
-- I wonder if that is a decent version (I see a number of people talking
about a grainy copy). I don't suppose there would be any "extras"
though. I also found it accessible from
www.mefeedia.com for
download...
It seems to make a difference if you search for It Happened on 5th
Avenue as opposed to It Happened on Fifth Avenue -- that's
how I found mefeedia.com.
ANYWAY -- I am glad I found fellow fans who think this movie should be an
annual event during Christmastime...
It seems that every year there are fewer and fewer Christmas movies aired ...
this year, for instance, they didn't even show Love Actually which I
thought would be on for sure, since it's still new.
In fact, I think this has happened since NBC hijacked It's a Wonderful
Life and only show it twice each year as an "event". I miss
the days when it was on somewhere at any time of the day from Thanksgiving to
Christmas and you could catch 30 minutes or so here or there if you were on
your way out... It seems that there were more showings of other old
movies like White Christmas, Holiday Inn or March of the Wooden
Soldiers before NBC's so-called event.
I wonder how many more wonderful movies have been lost? It's a
Wonderful Life was also once a rarely seen movie, shown occasionally on a
Saturday or Sunday afternoon ... I remember when no one I talked to about it
knew what I was talking about ...
Have any of you seen a wonderful movie called The Majestic? If
you like this, you would love that. It stars Jim Carey as you have never
seen him!
ANYWAY, glad I found this website.
Thanks Greg!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello
Greg,
I was
thrilled to find this website! I always enjoyed this movie and have not seen
it in a number of years. Of course I may be a little swayed because I’m Victor
Moore’s Grandson by Daughter Ora Moore. I would love to see it again.
Christmas always brings the movie and my Grandfather to mind.
Save me
a copy of your DVD. I will be ordering it post haste!

We saw this film 35 years ago and never forgot it. I recently looked for it
and ordered it from the web. My children and grandchildren all watched it with
us tonight. My husband and Iaughed as hard as we did all those years ago. It
stood the test of time. It is as good today as it was yesterday..

Greg,
Thanks for getting back to me and I do
appreciate the explanation. I haven't watched the film yet this
year. ... It's great that you have the website so that people who love the
film can pick up a copy. It's a shame that the movie hasn't been
restored. It's one of my favorites. My sister and I used to watch
it when we were kids when it was played at least once on
network TV during the Holidays. (I'm talking late 50's, early
60's. I don't think I had seen since then until I picked
up copies for my sis and myself from Hollywood's Attic a few years
back.) I seem to recall that in those days it was usually played on New
Year's Eve, as was Holiday Inn, another of my favorites.
Thanks again, and Merry
Christmas to you.
J
If you want this
movie to be shown on TCM, I suggest you email them at their site under "Suggest
a Movie". The more entries they have, the more chance we have them to put
it on.

I fell in love with this film in 1982…I recorded it on VHS…and then someone
recorded over it. My heart was broken. I couldn’t for the life of
me recall the name of the film…I wrote, I called, I searched the net. I
have be calling Roger Ebert for over 10 years, picking his brain for the name
of the film. So today, I had little to do at work because of the
holiday. I called AFI and spoke to this wonderful woman in the
library. I explain the film, I am sure she thought I was crazy; I
couldn’t stop crying while I spoke to her. Then out of the clear blue
sky this wonderful women came up with “It happened on Fifth Avenue.” I
now know how Columbus felt when he discovered America.
This film is forever etched on my heart. I came across you site.
So I am sharing my joy of this film
Bless you. Happy Holidays.

This is a super great movie! I haven't seen it in years until I stumbled upon it showing on:
A free online TV watching program called TVU: http://pages.tvunetworks.com/
They are showing It Happened On Fifth Avenue constantly (a few times a day) on the PDTV channel..
PDTV is www.nostalgiafamilyvideo.com
Their copy is pretty good..
Thanks for your web site. I didn't even know the name of the movie but found your site quite easy by a few keywords in a search engine....
Dang good movie....
~Thanks again...

Hi, Greg:
I enjoyed viewing your page about "It Happened on Fifth Avenue."
I thought you might be interested to know that Gale Storm is prominently featured in my new book, "The Women Who Made Television Funny: Ten Stars of 1950s Sitcoms," being published in February by McFarland and Company.
In the book, which features a new interview with Miss Storm, she mentions "Fifth Avenue" in discussing some of her favorites among her films.
More information about the book is here:
http://www.mcfarlandpub.com/book-2.php?isbn=0-7864-2900-3
If you think it's appropriate, please feel free to provide a link from your page so that others interested in Miss Storm might learn about the book. Thanks.

Hello, Greg!
I received a copy of this wonderful movie last year and have shared it with many relatives and friends who have enjoyed it. I sent an email to TCM but they apparently are not going to show it this holiday season. Too bad because I've always felt that if it were given a chance it would catch on the same way as It"s a Wonderful Life" did. I'll keep trying and hopefully, many of your friends will do the same.

Hi Greg,
Does “It Happened On 5th Avenue” ever air on TV? It’s been many years since I’ve seen it.
Thanks.

Some of the stills from Gayle Storm's website are in color. Since the film was shot in B&W and colorization was Ted Turners baby, could there be another place to look for colorized versions of the film? I sure would like to get a studio version.

Answer: I've looked everywhere (and I'm sill looking). My TIVO has a permanent search category "It Happened On*". I often record "It Happened One Night" with Clark Gable, but I never get this film.
Greg,
Thank you for having the inspiration to build this website. I have been trying to track down this movie for several (15-20) years with few results. Have you heard any news of this film being rereleased for DVD production? I keep looking in the WalMart twofer bins and places like Big Lots and various dollar stores and flea markets in the hopes of finding a copy. I would like to order a copy from you, if you are still producing any. You can reply to this email or reply to: ##########
Thank you... J H. Friley

Answer: Yep - I'm still producing them.
I ordered one on the internet and it is so fuzzy it is almost un-watchable.
How would you rate the quaulity of your DVD?
J McMullen
Thursday, November 30, 2006 12:59 PM
Answer: On a scale of 1-10, I guess I'd give it about a 7 or an 8. I've ordered the film from every place I can find, and I still think mine is better than all the rest, even though it's a DVD of a video tape!
I'm still looking to purchase story written by Lewis called "Free For All " and was made into movie for 1949. Please advise as if this was among others, of short storys groupings. The movie is excellent.

Answer: Wow - I have no idea! But I'd like to see that movie.
Hello Greg,
I have a pretty good copy of this film, which looks to be from 16mm. However, like you can't find out too much about it. Movies Unlimited seems to have put out a VHS copy, but I haven't seen it. Are you familiar with that release? The one I have opens with Pathe Pictures presents. but internet movie data base doesn't credit that studio. Your info about it having been done by Monogram is really a rare tidbit. Are you still of the impression the film is in the public domain?
Victor
Answer: You lucky dog! You wouldn't want to share that with the rest of us, would you? :) No, I haven't seen the Movies Unlimited version. Yes, as far as I can tell, it's still in the public domain.
Thank you! What a wonderful movie!

Greg,
Any updates as to the showing of this film? Or who we might contact to let them know of the popularity of the film? Surely some film critic or someone in the industry could be contacted. They surely would be in a position to get this most wonderful film back on TV.
Thanks,
Steve M
Tuesday, January 31, 2006 10:22 PM
Answer: Unfortunately, there are no updates. No one is showing this film anymore. But all of you out there - please keep trying!
I have loved this movie for so long. I bought a poor copy, better than not having it, and have lost it as I lone it out a lot.
Where does the best copy come from. I asked the color people to do this movie, the ones that just did the great rupert.
It would really be a good movie to clean up. and colorizing is ok to me. You still get both black and white and color on the same disc.
I will in the mean time get another copy. my last copy was from england and was bad. Anyone know who has the best prints on vhs.
Thanks, J Fach

I have looked for this movie for years...maybe 45 years or more. I remember seeing it as a small boy and asked people it they remembered it.
All I could remember were bits of the story. Tonight at a party I repeated the story as I remembered it and someone went on Google and typed
"hobo+madison avenue+movie" and up it came.
Amazing what Google can do. I intend to purchase a copy from the site you recommend. Thanks for going to the trouble create a web page for this
wonderful flashback to my childhood.
Merry Christmas...

Dear Greg:
I have been searching for this movie for over 15
years, either on cable, TV
or in VHS (now DVD) form and have been
unsuccessful. No one, except my
sister, remembers this old Christmas movie. It
Happened on Fifth Avenue
ranks up there with the best! It saddens me
beyond what mere words can
express, the quality of yesteryear that is not
here for us to enjoy
anymore...especially now that I have a daughter
to share "precious moments"
with. We are living proof that old movies are
great as I am 44 years and my
daughter is only 9 years old - we both love
watching old movies!
If you know of how I can purchase this movie I
would be so very grateful.
Respectfully,
M Marek

all better. Thanks Greg.

Hello. My name is Michael Lewis. Herbert Clyde Lewis was my father. I just did a google search on his name (expecting nothing).
I'm stunned. I just read through your guestbook. All these people whose lives were affected by his movie! I have nothing new to contribute--Herb Lewis
is mostly an old memory; I was 12 when he died. The family was fragmented; me, my sister and my mother in Los Angeles, Herb in New York City.
He had been an editor on Time Magazine in 1949-50. I'll stop here, but I'm glad I found your site...

Its not only a BEST movie but it is fantastic for family viewing. "The Man From Snowy River" and this film are my favorite movies.
I'm seventy one years old and would like desperately to see this fim again with my children and GRANDCHILDREN. HELP!

I can't tell you how pleased I am that you found this marvelous movie. I am 57 and it played every year when I was a child along with wonderful movies
like..... One touch of Venus, Mr. Peabody and The Mermaid. and I Married a Witch.
This will complete my childhood favorites. I have been trying to get this for years.
I did find someone about five years ago who had a copy and wanted to sell it to me for $300
He was listed in Maltons movie review book.
I hope anyone who purchases this will have many years of pleasure .

I have scanned the movie-guide of the weekly TV log book for years in hopes of seeing
this movie that my wife and enjoyed so many years ago. Today, I watched a movie on
Turner Classic Movies with actor Charlie Ruggles. He of course played Michael J. O'Connor,
the millionaire in the movie, It Happened On Fifth Avenue. This prompted me to look up the
movie title on the internet and here I am. Particularly memorable to me is when O'Connor
gets a whiff of Mary's slumgullion.
I, like others, have contacted TCM inquiring if this movie would ever be aired again.
According to the reply, they had no such plans. What a shame. Does anyone know why it
has not been released again? I should have recorded it for my personal use years ago.

I am 72 years old, and I was about 8 years old when I saw this movie. At that time,
the price of the movie ticket for me, being a child .09 cents.
I have always remembered this movie because of the wonderful acting of Victor Moore,
especially at the ending. He made me cry as it was so sad, as Victor Moore was
describing attributes of each of the actors as they had to give up the residence because
the owner was coming back to his home.
That was so sad, as I felt he was saying goodbye to his family, and never seeing them again.
I have contacted Turner Classic Movies, hoping that they would be able to run this
movie, but, after reading this article I see why The movie has'nt been screened.
If it is ever done in a VHS format, I'll get a copy as quick as I can.
Thank you for reading my letter, that movie has always been a part
of my life.

Hi Greg,
I was thrilled to see your site about one of my favorite Christmas movies.
I am a bit prejudice…my father is Don DeFore, who had top billing. Perhaps you have
communicated with my brother Ron, who set-up dad’s fan club website. We have VHS tape
copies of the film and my wife and I viewed it this past December for the 1st time in
several years. If you ever hear about a DVD release, we would love to get a copy.
An interesting story that dad used to tell was his disappointment in the direction of the
film and his happenchance to talk about the movie at a party (probably in the ‘60s) with
the great director, Frank Capra. Apparently, among many of the scripts Mr. Capra was
given to read was “It’s A Wonderful Life” and “It Happened On Fifth Avenue.” Mr. Capra
told Dad that he had always loved Dad’s film and the story and that he (Mr. Capra) might
have chosen the wrong script to direct! Of course this took place long before “It’s A
Wonderful Life” received so much TV airplay in the 70’s, becoming one of the most beloved
movies of all time. But what a difference the film’s quality could have been if it had
had the Capra touch!
Take care D4

(DEAR) mr greg!
what a joy. you can't imagine. I found it. the film that almost all my life
i have tried to find. I saw it as a litle girl 9 years old together with my
mother, in kape verd islands an old portuguese colony. I never forgot this
film. I got married with a sweed and im living in sweden about 36 years ago
and I have tried and tried to get to know about this film. IT HAPPENED ON
FIFTH AVENUE I discribed it everywhere, in all shops in stockholm, and a
very young boy in a store told me that the film was from 1940,s. and he knew
about it, and today my eldest son made it possible for me to known about it.
he told me that it not impossible to buy it. I wept of joy, Im feeling so
happy tonight. thanks to you. I wish you all hapiness to this new year.

My family and I also enjoy this holiday classic. We first saw it many years ago (maybe 1988) and we look for it on TV
every year. It was on TV 3 or 4 years ago and I taped it, but my VCR was old and the copy is not very good, but it
allows us to get our "fix" at Christmas time.
I would love to have a DVD copy of it. Please let me know if anything comes out.

Thanks for your email page. I too have searched for this great heart warming movie.I saw it once in the seventies.
A number of times during Christmas seasons, I would ask around at all the local movie rental stores like Blockbusters,
to no avail. You would think TMC would be more responsive, after reviewing the guest book numbers who also rave about IHOFA.

Greg,
We can identify with your personal story in your quest for a copy of the
movie and with your appreciation of the actors, the director and the story. It is
uplifting and quite entertaining as far as Christmas classics goes. It is our
opinion, along with many other friends who have experienced it some years
back, that this movie has been sadly overlooked, and quite frankly held its own
against the also nominated 1947 Miracle on 34th Street, if in deed, not
surpassing it. As very small children, Gale Storm as My Little Margie was also
memorable, and she nevewr recieved the recognition she deserved as well the rest of
her cast.
Please keep us infomed should " 5th Avenue " ever make it to the
re-production quality it deserves on VHS/DVD, or any other update on the film.
Thx.

I can't believe the number of people who have remembered this great old film
that I saw as a young boy in the late 1940's and later on TV. I have also
tried contacting AMC and they responded to my letter by saying that they
would eventually show it. However, this was never done! I have often felt
that this would be a great Christmas movie to show on a daily basis. It
would develop an audience that would be similar to people who watch "Miracle
on 34th street" and "It's a Wonderful Life"...
Thanks again. I now know that I'm not the only
one who remembers this film.

Hi Greg,
I just heard about this film. Apparently, my 45 year old cousin, Frank, remembered
only parts of the film in a dream. He did not know any characters or the title of the
movie. With that information, his first cousin, Rick, searched until he found the
movie for him and gave it as a gift. Now, for the last several years, Frank
conducts a movie theater in his own home with seating in aisles, flashlight and popcorn,
beverages and all movie amenities, and the crowd that comes to his house on the day after
Thanksgiving grows and grows each year. All the relatives and friends come, as well as
half the local VFW and Elks Club. Now. I am hoping to purchase my own personal copy.
Thanks for all you do to keep this film alive!

I enjoyed traveling back in time while viewing your website.
I have been searching for a copy of “It Happened on Fifth Avenue” for years.

Hello,
...Gale Storm is my great great (and another great maybe) aunt.......I have just recently

like Ms. Storm.....it is almost eerie.....
Again, thank you for the wonderful website......it has enriched us of our family heritage.

I've been searching for this movie, which I saw
on tv as a kid (I'm in my
50s now). At least I think it's the right one.
There's a scene where the
main character talks about a hobo stew called
"slumgullion." (Yes - this is the movie! - Greg)
I couldn't remember the actor's name but I
could picture him and
remembered his funny voice. I sat and scrolled
through dozens of character
actor photos on some website I found, but never
saw the man I was searching
for. Then today TCM showed Swing Time, and there
he was, as Pop. I went to
IMDB to find out the names of the actors and
discovered the name Victor
Moore. I started looking at the brief
descriptions of all his films and
stopped when I came to IHOFA. Perseverence paid
off. Thanks for having this
website. I just ordered the film. I sure hope
it's the one I'm looking for;
it's just that one scene that I remember from
when I watched it years ago.
Take care,
Lynne

I grew up in St. Louis and this was played
annually for several years on one
of their independent channels. Then it
disappeared off the face of the earth,
so it seemed. However, my Mother taped it, and
except for the first (about)
20 minutes, I have a very nice copy. Thankfully,
we found this videotape
among hundreds of VCR tapes in her house before
she passed away. As my Mother
and my favorite Christmas movie I have watched it
in her memory around
Christmas time.

Thank you for the information on finding the movie,
"It Happened on Fifth Avenue". I have been looking
for this movie for many, many years. The last time I
saw this film was with my late father 43 years ago. I
too had requested AMC and TCM to show this wonderful
movie (several times) but like with your experience,
those requests were ignored.
I really appreciate your web site. Following the
information on your web site, I went out to
Hollywood's Attic and purchased a copy of it -
even a bad copy of this wonderful movies is better than
no copy.
Thanks,
Bob D.
I finally found some information on this movie today. I read
where there is no VHS or DVD copies. Is there a reason why it has not
been made available to the public anymore? This was my favorite
Christmas movie. I saw it in the theatre in L.A. when I was 9 years
old. It was on TV in the L.A. area in the late 40’s & early 50’s.
The chemistry between the actors is what made it such a great movie. I
have told family and friends for over 50 years that this is the best
Christmas movie of all.

I am a first cousin of Herbert Clyde Lewis, although I never met him.
My father was an uncle to him when he was born. ...I've heard about this movie
all my life. I would be thrilled to see the movie...

Thanks for having info on this movie!!!!! I stumbled across it while looking for info
on my great-uncle Herbert Clyde Lewis. He, along with a man named Fredrick Stephani,
wrote the "motion picture story" for it and they were the names on the academy nomination.
Uncle Herbert also wrote a few novels - one of them was Season's Greetings
(Dial Press, 1941), and I think the "It Happened on Fifth Avenue" movie may have been an
adaptation of it somehow.* I have never seen the movie but I will follow your link
and likely order it (bad copy or not). I never met Herbert either - I believe he died
before I was born (he was young). He was one of many whose promising careers were
interrupted, for better or worse, by the "Hollywood blacklisting" & McCarthy era hearings.
Anyway, thanks again for having info on the movie I could not find it anywhere else after
hours of searching. Thanks!

*Editor's note: A good friend of mine
found a copy of this book and gave it to me for Christmas.
Unfortunately it is not the same story (at all) as IHOFA.

..as mentioned in your "It
Happened on Fifth Avenue"
webpage I was most excited to have finally found
something about this
wonderful movie. My father first saw this movie
when it came out in 1947 and
my family and i have been watching our 'copied
from TNT' VHS tape for years.
It sounds as if we are in the same boat as far as
quality is concerned. The
picture is adequate and the sound is really very
poor. ... Thanks for your webpage on this amazing
classic film ...
Miss Becky
...enjoyed reading your page. My brother loves this movie, and have searched in vain until now...Thanks!

I can't believe it! Yes...this was my all time favorite Xmas movie!! I
have a poor VHS copy of it I made myself off of the television in the
mid-80s. The nice thing about my copy is that Gale Storm was appearing
at a local theatre and she signed my tape!! I got to ask her about the
film and working with Charles Ruggles (who I love!) and Victor Moore.
She told me it was one of the most enjoyable experiences on a film set.
Last year my husband and I traveled to New York City. While we were
there I was hoping to "find" the house that is featured in the
movie...at least the outside shot of it. Do you know if that house
existed...and still exist..the Michael J. O'Conner house. Thanks again
for making this website. I'll be back.
Sincerely
Yvonne N
Thanks very much for making my year and may be more. I've looked for
this movie for over 12 years. One of the local stations in Los Angeles
(KTLA, Channel 5) used to air this movie every year during the holiday
season and then they suddenly stopped. I tried to get a copy of the
movie from several different sources over the years...no luck. I even
contacted the Charles Ruggles Estate and was told that it would not be
released again. Thanks to you, I my be getting a copy very soon!

I can't believe that I went from knowing only the bare
bones of a plot to having a copy of this great film.
Thank you so much for your help. All of the people at
IMDB were really kind to to take the time to help me
out. Now that I have seen the film I have also visited
your web site. Quite well done! I wonder why the
stations you contacted never bothered to contact you
back??? I belive that most of the commercial stations
are unaware of the great demand for many of these fine
films. Again, many thanks to you

I too saw the movie once. It left a lasting impression. I would
like to have my children see it. I have emailed ACM and TCM to get on
their list in case it is broadcast.

Ive always thought the movies title did not fit the story though it
takes place on Fifth Ave. I dont know what it should be, but maybe Mr.
McKeevers name would be included in it. Anybody else had the same
thought?

After reading your comments about this movie, I thought they were my
words! I too have contacted AMC about this movie and probably the last
time I saw it was on TNT, which I taped. It was on regularly each
holiday season along with Holiday Inn and White Christmas even though
“…Fifth Avenue” is not a holiday movie. I had taped this movie from TNT
and had thought it had been stored away by someone who had bought the
rights to it. I happened to see it late one night while In Las Vegas at
least 10 years ago, and knew then it was still around. I contacted AMC
and they told me to contact Warner Bros. or some movie studio about the
film and that they had no rights to show the movie. I have contacted
Turner Broadcasting and asked them to show it on TCM, but like you have
never heard from them. It is my favorite movie and I rate it right up
there with “It’s A Wonderful Life” and that’s just my opinion.
Hopefully, with other viewers’ input and requests, this film will be
put on DVD or VHS. I’m just wondering if, as AMC has advertised about
old movies that have been stored and fall victim to the ravages of
time, this movie is being restored? That would be great! When I copied
my video from TNT, I paused at the commercials, though it has some
breaking away to TNT advertising. I’d like to purchase the movie from
Hollywood’s Attic, just to see if my copy is in the movie’s entirety.
Thanks for the info and I’m so happy there are others out there who
feel like I do about this movie.
-Steve Miller
Terrific job on the new website... Nice going! I shall "continue the search" and will be certain to keep you posted.
